New York Zendo is open for zazen six days a week. We are open for zazen in the morning, from 6:45 to 7:45, Tuesday through Friday. Our weekly evening programs run from 7:00 to 9:00, Tuesday through Friday.
Wednesday and Friday evenings we have two regular sits; a few of our members host informal discussion and tea gatherings after the Wednesday night sit. Thursday night remains our Intro to Zen night, with an orientation and shorter sits for newcomers. Curtis Gatz continues to offer tai chi classes on Tuesday night; beginners are welcome on an ongoing basis.
On Saturday mornings, our chanting service begins at 9:30, with one sit to follow.
In addition to the weekly schedule, all-day sittings, Dharma talks by guest teachers and New York Zendo members, special events, and ceremonies are offered regularly throughout the year.
We welcome all newcomers. However, anyone who has never sat with us before, even those experienced in zazen or other forms of meditation, must first attend a Thursday evening Intro to Zazen. If scheduling conflicts do not permit attendance at the Thursday evening orientation, other arrangements may be made (especially for those who have practiced elsewhere).
For nonmembers, a suggested donation of $10 for evening programs or $5 for morning zazen is greatly appreciated.
Membership at New York Zendo is open to anyone who, after completing the Thursday evening introduction, shows a sincere intention to be a committed member of the sangha and agrees to pay monthly dues. Please inquire about suggested monthly dues rates and other details.
Please see below for the weekly schedule. Also, check the calendar for updates, or pick up a monthly flyer, located in the zendo foyer. During the summer and winter interim breaks, the zendo continues to offer zazen on a limited basis.
