New York Zendo is open for zazen five days a week. Evening zazen is held Tuesday through Friday. Morning zazen is also held Tuesday through Friday, except when Dai Bosatsu Zendo is in sesshin, (see DBZ calendar). Saturday mornings begin with a chanting service, followed by two periods of zazen, and ending with an informal tea.

On Tuesday evenings, an optional Tai Chi class is offered after one period of sitting. The practice of Tai Chi focuses on developing our primal energy force. By integrating breath and movement to aid in the release and transformation of negative mental and emotional aspects, Tai Chi serves as an excellent supplement to zazen practice. The class is taught by New York Zendo senior student, Curtis Gatz. No reservations are necessary. Loose-fitting, dark clothing is recommended.

In addition to the weekly schedule, all-day sittings, teishos, Dharma talks, and special events and ceremonies are offered throughout the year.

We welcome all newcomers. However, anyone who has never sat with us before, even those experienced in zazen or other forms of meditation, must first attend a Thursday evening (see Zazen Introduction). If scheduling conflicts do not permit attendance at the Thursday evening orientation, other arrangements may be made (especially for those who have practiced elsewhere).

Evening programs are $15 for non-members; mornings are $5. Membership at New York Zendo is open to anyone who, after completing the Thursday evening introduction, shows a sincere intention to be a committed member of the Sangha.

Please see below for the weekly schedule. Also, check the calendar for updates, or pick up a monthly flyer, located in the Zendo foyer. During the summer and winter interim breaks, the Zendo is closed.
